Poster from McKee’s Museum of Sunken Treasure. Collected from Art McKee’s salvages, this first museum devoted to sunken wreckage and valuables sparked interest in such history. McKee lived here in the Florida Keys, where he became an inventor (co-inventing the first underwater scooter and metal detector) and the world's first dive guide, starting recreational diving.

Working replica helmet based on the 1954 Disney version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. After the Williamson brothers had just shot the first underwater movie, they used their same method (a sealed tube that extended from under a boat) to film the original 1916 version.

Recreationally diving with floating “hookah” rigs such as this is often referred to as “snuba” (a mashup of “snorkeling” and “scuba”). This modern style of surface-supplied diving lacks the heavy worn equipment of the past.

This helmet was used for underwater training of Russian cosmonauts (the U.S., Europe, Canada and Japan call them astronauts). People training for space missions use diving to simulate similar conditions and problems to overcome.

Diving glove of Donna Tobias, the first female Deep Sea Diver in the U.S. Navy. She voiced of the Navy, “one of the things that exists … is the camaraderie. We all have each other’s lives in our hands. … But you’re all in it together … you get weary together, and you get cold together, and you laugh together.”

Helmet dive weight. Many of the diving helmets you see weigh 50 to 60 pounds. Heavy dive gear and dive weights, also worn on a belt, counter the natural buoyancy (tendency to float) of people and air within helmets, suits and tanks. Extra weight was often needed for a helmet to make sure it stayed on the diver’s head.

Underwater oil lamps had to be lit then quickly resealed and submerged into the water before heating up. Otherwise, contact with the colder water would crack the glass. If this 1860 lamp hadn’t cracked and been taken out of use, it likely would not have survived to today.

Remotely operated vehicle (ROV). ROVs can complete deeper tasks than divers (the average ROV can dive to 6,000 meters), but a diver’s hands are often the best tools. At up to 300 meters, a job can use a combination of ROVs and divers, sometimes in armored suits.
